What Do I Need to Know?

Q.  How old do I have to be?
A.
You must be 18 years of age by the end of the racing season.

Q.  Do I need a medical exam before the school?
A.
You must have a completed medical form. Plan ahead. As soon as you think you may be attending school, set an appointment with your physician for the physical exam. In addition you will need to submit a Trackside Medical form with some basic medical information with your entry form.

Q.  What do I need to do to prepare myself for school?
A.
In preparation for the school, make sure you have a conforming race car and gear. Your car must be prepared to VSCDA specs. If your car is not ready, you may be able to rent a race car. VSCDA does not rent cars, but you might find a member willing to rent a car.

Q.  Do I have to get my car teched before going to school?
A.
The car must be teched prior to going on the track (tech is usually open for a few hours before the Thursday evening school and an hour before school starts on Friday).

Q.  What will tech do?
A.
Tech will check your car for all of the required safety gear, including but not limited to roll bar, fuel cell, fire extinguisher, race belts (no more than 5 years old) and a transponder. They will also check your racing gear.

Q.  Does my car need a passenger seat?
A.
A passenger seat is not required but you will find it helpful.

Q.  Is it possible for two people to share a car?
A.
It is not possible for two people to share a car.

Q.  Can I drive a street car?
A.
You cannot drive your street car.

Q.  What kind of equipment do I need?
A.
You need to have a 2000 SA helmet (or newer), three layer race suit (or two layer with nomex underwear), racing shoes, gloves, socks, balaclava, and arm restraints (if you have an open car or a sedan without side curtains).

Q.  What should I bring with me to class?
A.
Bring a pad of paper and pen as well as the packet VSCDA will mail to you which includes check lists that address what to bring to the track and what the student should do to prepare.

Q.  Can someone come with me?
A.
It is helpful to have a friend with you who can fuel your car, check your oil and tire pressure (further explanation later). Your friend is welcome to attend the Thursday evening class.

Q.  Must I attend the Thursday evening class?
A.
The Thursday evening class, which begins at 7:00 p.m., is MANDATORY but check your confirmation sheet for any changes. In that class, you learn flagging, what will be expected of you on Friday, racing terms, strategies, etiquette, rules... You will be assigned your instructor.

Q.  What is the instructor to student ratio?
A.
We try to keep the instructor/student ratio 1 to 1.

Q.  What supplies can I get at the track?
A.
Racing fuel, air and water are available at the track, as well as food and beverages.

Q.  Are tires available at the track?

Friday

Q.  What do I need to know about Friday?
A.
Be well rested. Bring plenty of water or Gatorade and do not be late. We start on time.

Q.  How do I get to know how to drive the track?
A.
We start out by acquainting you with the track. You will ride in various vehicles (not race cars) showing you the correct racing lines and braking points.

Q.  When will I get to drive my race car, and will I be instructed on how I performed?
A.
Your first session out, you will drive your own car following an instructor in a conga line. After each session in the car you will have a critique session in the classroom. There is plenty of time to ask questions either in the classroom or directly with your instructor. The interplay is very important. This is why it is helpful for you to have an assistant to help you with your car as you do not have much time after your classroom session to take care of checking the needs of your race car (fuel, water, air, tightened lug nuts, oil, etc.).

Q.  Are all students on the track at the same time?
A.
Not all students will be on the track at the same time. We usually divide you into 3 groups.     Top of Page

Q.  How much track time will I have?
A.
You will be on the track all day, intermittent sessions with other race groups. Typically, you get 6 sessions or approximately 2 hours of track time plus your classroom critique sessions.

Q.  If I pass the school, can I race right away?
A.
If you pass the school, VSCDA will grant you competition privileges. You will be required to put an "X" on your race car. When you have completed 3 incident- free races with VSCDA, you can remove the "X" and apply for a VMC license which is a nationally recognized vintage license.

Q.  WHAT WILL I GET OUT OF THIS SCHOOL?
A.
You will be prepared to run with any vintage organization, as you will have learned the rules, how to pass, race etiquette, flags, and much more. You will have learned car control, consistency and confidence.
